Substrate Preparation: The Foundation is Crucial

The single most critical factor differentiating a successful large tile installation from a failure is the quality of the substrate the surface beneath the tile. Large format tiles, due to their size, are far less forgiving of imperfections. Any slight unevenness in the floor or wall becomes immediately apparent, leading to lippage (where the edges of adjacent tiles are not flush).

Before installation, the substrate must be perfectly flat and structurally sound. Installers often use self levelling compounds on floors to achieve this ideal flatness.
